A local run without the guesswork

New in town? Borrow a Fredericton morning.

Here for a conference, work trip, race weekend, new job or move? No registration, RSVP, membership or Strava account is required. Arrive between 6:05 and 6:10 a.m. and tell the Run Host you are new to the city.

Three useful things before you come

No sign-up. No required app.

For a regular club run, you can literally show up. Here is what is optional and what is worth planning ahead.

Simply show up

You do not need to register, reserve a place, RSVP, become a member or know somebody. An online response is optional. Arrive a few minutes early and say it is your first time.

What is Strava?

Strava is a website and app many people use to record activities and follow clubs. Devon Deer uses it like a digital notice board for weather, holiday times, route notes and last-minute changes. You do not need a Strava account to run with us.

Plan washrooms ahead

The road loop usually takes 40 to 50 minutes and has few dependable washroom opportunities once the herd leaves. The two regroup stops are not washroom breaks. Access at Picaroons depends on opening hours, and Odell Park facilities vary by season.

If you live with IBS, pregnancy-related urgency, a medication effect or any other need, use facilities before arriving and message us privately for the latest options. You never need to disclose a diagnosis.

The quick plan

From hotel room to herd.

  1. Check for changes. Strava is our optional online notice board. If you do not use it, check Instagram or message the club instead.
  2. Meet at Picaroons. Aim for 6:05 to 6:10 a.m. because parking can fill. Monday and Wednesday road runs leave at 6:15 sharp from 912 Union Street.
  3. Say you are visiting. The host will explain the route, fronty, sweeper and two planned regroup stops.

Moving to Fredericton?

Build a few connections before the city feels familiar.

People who have just moved, or are still planning the move, are welcome to follow the herd and ask questions. A run can introduce the bridge, the river paths and the northside. Coffee can introduce names, familiar faces and other parts of Fredericton’s running community.

You do not have to make Devon Deer your only club. We are happy to be the first door and help you find other groups, trail communities, events or training partners that fit the life you are building here.

Downtown and northside hotels

How to find us.

Picaroons Roundhouse is at the north end of the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge. Walking times are estimates, so open live directions and leave a little buffer.

659 Queen Street

Crowne Plaza Fredericton-Lord Beaverbrook

Allow about 20 minutes on foot from the downtown riverfront.

The usual walk follows the South Riverfront Trail and crosses the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge to Picaroons.

620 Queen Street

Hilton Garden Inn Fredericton Downtown

Allow about 20 minutes on foot from the hotel and Convention Centre.

Head to the riverfront, then cross the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge. The Roundhouse is at the north end.

15 Riverside Drive

Fort Nashwaak Motel at Cannon’s Cross

You are already on the north side, close to the riverside trail network.

Open live directions before leaving. The best route can depend on light, weather and trail conditions.

480 Riverside Drive

Ramada by Wyndham Fredericton

Plan a short drive or ride to Picaroons rather than a pre-run walk.

Free parking is available near the Roundhouse. Open live directions for current road conditions.

Devon Deer is not affiliated with these hotels. Hotel names are included only to help visitors plan a route.

What safety looks like at 6:15

A known place, named roles and a finishing count.

Early mornings can feel unfamiliar in a new city. The road group meets in a public parking area. A Run Host welcomes the herd, a fronty leads, a sweeper stays behind the runners and two planned regroups reconnect the group. The host completes a finishing headcount.

  • Bring a light and reflective details when it is dark.
  • Use a short ride if the pre-dawn hotel walk does not feel right for you.
  • Message the club before coming if an accommodation or regular run-walk intervals would help.
  • Read the participation and safety notice before your first run.
