A little lore, a clear plan

The 6:15 welcome.

The opening is meant to make people laugh, tell everyone exactly how the morning works and make a first-timer feel looked after before anyone takes a step.

Today’s highly unofficial distinction

Choose the blank.

Use the suggestion, invent one from the weather or let the herd shout one out.

Welcome to Devon Deer, Fredericton’s mostawake-ishmorning run club.
A ready-to-use version

Say it like a person.

The route paragraph is an example. Check the current Strava event, wind, surface and volunteer coverage before using it.

“Welcome to Devon Deer, Fredericton’s most awake-ish morning run club.

This morning, to avoid the northwest wind, we’ll follow the ancient foraging path of the Devon Deer along the Northside Trail. We’ll stop and regroup, go over Mount Westmorland, then regroup on the other side. From there we’ll come back along the Southside Trail and cross the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge.

The whole group usually finishes in about 40 to 50 minutes. All running paces are welcome and nobody runs alone. Today’s fronty or fronties are [names]. Our experienced sweeper is [name].

If this is your first time and you happen to be at the back, nothing you say will make the sweeper leave you behind. Staying with the final runner is their job. You do not need to apologize or speed up. Regulars, please help new folks feel at home and make sure nobody becomes separated.

Anyone under 19 must stay with their own parent or legal guardian for the entire activity. Our volunteers are not background-checked youth supervisors, and the fronty or sweeper never replaces a guardian.

Dogs are welcome on a short fixed leash. If this is your dog’s first run with the group, please start at the back or on the outside edge of the middle pack while they settle. Keep them outside the line of runners and give other people and dogs space.

At each regroup, we’ll make sure the final runner gets about a minute to reset before the group leaves again. Please tell the host or sweeper if you need to stop or leave the route.

Before we leave, we’ll take a quick optional picture. It is completely fine to step out. Everyone else, say cheesy noodles!

After the finishing headcount, everyone is invited for coffee at Grain & Grind inside the Picaroons Roundhouse.”

Before the herd moves

Eleven things to settle.

The funny opening earns attention. This checklist uses that attention to give everyone the same route and safety picture.

  1. Protect the start time.Invite people to arrive between 6:05 and 6:10. Begin the welcome early enough to leave at 6:15 sharp, and do not make the whole herd late for a late arrival.
  2. Check the plan.Confirm the current Strava event, route, weather, surface and any holiday change.
  3. Name the route.Point out both regroup locations, road crossings and any change from the usual counter-clockwise loop.
  4. Introduce the fronty.Name every person leading and confirm they know today’s route and regroup points.
  5. Confirm the sweeper.Use an experienced runner who knows the route and accepts the final-runner role. If nobody can sweep, pause and solve coverage before starting.
  6. Check the under-19 rule.A minor must remain with their own parent or legal guardian. Do not start the run with an unaccompanied minor or assign a volunteer to supervise them.
  7. Place dogs safely.Confirm a short fixed leash and one dog per handler. Ask first-time dogs to begin at the back or outside edge of the middle pack. The sweeper never takes charge of a participant’s dog.
  8. Welcome new people.Ask regulars to include them. Remind everyone that pace never needs an apology.
  9. Protect the regroup.Aim to give the final runner about one minute to reset. Adjust for weather, traffic or anyone’s needs.
  10. Offer the photo.Make participation clearly optional, then deploy “cheesy noodles.” Photograph a recognizable minor only with documented guardian permission and the young person’s agreement. A photo never replaces a headcount.
  11. Count everyone home.Complete the finishing headcount before coffee or anyone drives away.
The reward at the bridge

Coffee is an invitation, not an obligation.

The usual road run takes the whole group about 40 to 50 minutes. After the finishing headcount, anyone who has time is welcome at Grain & Grind Coffee Co., inside Picaroons Roundhouse, 912 Union Street.

That invitation includes people who are injured, paused from running or simply curious about the community. Nobody has to earn the table by completing the route.

Route, timing and café hours can change. Check the current event and never rush a final runner to meet a coffee schedule.

Mount Westmorland?

It is the herd’s affectionate name for the Westmorland Street Bridge climb, not an actual mountain. A little theatrical geography is part of the welcome.
